In 2026 the real Connecticut incentive money is in heat pumps, weatherization and heat pump water heaters. Rebates on new natural gas furnaces and boilers ended, and the federal 25C tax credit expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Here is what is actually on the table right now, what it takes to qualify, and how to claim it without losing the money on a technicality.
Checked August 2026, and this page will go stale
Every figure below was verified in August 2026. Energize CT program amounts, caps and qualified equipment lists change between program years and sometimes mid year, and the Smart-E promotional rate has already changed once in 2026. Confirm current terms at energizect.com before you sign anything, and ask your contractor to put the incentive in writing on the proposal.
Key takeaways
- Air source heat pumps are the centerpiece: reported at 250 dollars per ton standard, rising to 1,000 dollars per ton on the whole home Energy Optimization path.
- Natural gas furnace and boiler rebates were discontinued for sales after December 31, 2024.
- The federal 25C credit expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.
- Smart-E heat pump financing is 1.99 percent on a five year term from August 1 through December 31, 2026, replacing the 0.99 percent promotion that ended July 31.
What Connecticut actually pays for in 2026
Connecticut runs its residential energy incentives through Energize Connecticut, funded by the utilities and administered alongside the Connecticut Green Bank for financing. The programs have shifted hard toward electrification over the last two years. That shift is the single most important thing for a homeowner to understand, because it means the equipment that was subsidized three years ago may not be subsidized today.
Here is the shape of it as of August 2026. Amounts marked as reported come from published program summaries rather than a page we could verify directly, so treat them as the shape of the program and confirm the exact number before you buy.
| Upgrade | What is available in 2026 | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Air source heat pump or ductless mini split | Reported at 250 dollars per ton standard, up to 1,000 dollars per ton on the whole home Energy Optimization path, with combined caps reported around 10,000 dollars | Installer must be in the Heat Pump Installer Network and equipment must be on the qualified product list |
| Ground source (geothermal) heat pump | Separate residential incentive through Energize CT | Program specific equipment and contractor rules |
| Heat pump water heater | Reported around 900 dollars instant, with income qualified households reported up to roughly 1,900 dollars total | ENERGY STAR certified unit |
| Weatherization through Home Energy Solutions | Assessment copay of 40 dollars as of April 1, 2026, with weatherization incentives reported up to 10,000 dollars | Assessment first, then approved weatherization contractor |
| Natural gas furnace or boiler | Nothing. Discontinued for sales after December 31, 2024 | Not applicable |
| Federal 25C tax credit | Expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025 | Confirm current federal rules with a tax professional |
Heat pumps, where the real money is
If you take one thing from this page, take this: Connecticut has decided to pay people to move off fossil fuel heat, and the heat pump incentive is where that money went. A ductless mini split counts as an air source heat pump, so the same program covers the systems we install most often across Waterbury, Naugatuck, Watertown and the surrounding towns.
There are two tiers, and the difference between them is large. The standard tier applies when a heat pump is added to a home that keeps its existing heating system. The Energy Optimization tier, which carries the much larger per ton amount, applies when the heat pump becomes the primary heating system and the old fossil fuel system is displaced.
Two rules disqualify more homeowners than anything else. First, the installing contractor has to be in the Heat Pump Installer Network. Second, the equipment has to appear on the qualified product list, which since January 2024 has meant ENERGY STAR cold climate certification. Miss either one and the rebate is not reduced, it is zero.
The American Heating position on rebate paperwork
We tell you before you sign whether your system qualifies, roughly for how much, and what documentation the program wants. If a system does not qualify we say so rather than letting you find out after the install. For the equipment side of this decision, our Connecticut mini split installation cost guide walks through what the systems actually cost before any incentive.
Not sure whether your project qualifies?
We will tell you what the program covers for your house before you commit to anything.
What no longer gets you a rebate
This is the part most homeowners get wrong, usually because they read an article from three years ago. Two significant programs have ended.
Natural gas furnaces and boilers
The sponsors of Energize Connecticut discontinued rebates and incentives on natural gas equipment for sales after December 31, 2024. Before that, qualifying gas furnaces and gas boilers carried mail in rebates. If you are replacing a gas furnace or a gas boiler with the same fuel in 2026, plan on paying full price and treat any rebate you find as a pleasant surprise rather than part of your budget.
That does not mean gas equipment is the wrong choice. It means the incentive math no longer favors it. A sound gas boiler that gets serviced every year is still a perfectly good way to heat a Connecticut house, and our boiler services page covers both repair and replacement. The same applies to furnace service and replacement.
The federal 25C tax credit
The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, known as 25C, expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. For years this credit was worth up to 2,000 dollars on a qualifying heat pump and a smaller amount on high efficiency furnaces, under an annual cap. If you installed qualifying equipment before the end of 2025 you may still claim it on the return covering that year.
Confirm the federal side with a tax professional
Federal energy credits have been changed, extended and allowed to lapse more than once. We are an HVAC contractor, not tax advisers, and we will not quote you a federal credit amount for a 2026 installation. Ask your accountant what applies to your return before you count that money.
Heat pump water heaters
A heat pump water heater is the quiet winner in the current program structure. It is a smaller project than a full heating conversion, it qualifies for a meaningful instant rebate, and it cuts the second largest energy load in most Connecticut houses.
Published summaries put the standard incentive around 900 dollars, with income qualified households reported as high as roughly 1,900 dollars in total support. The unit has to be ENERGY STAR certified. If your current tank is over ten years old and sits in a basement or utility space with some air around it, this is worth pricing. Our water heater services page covers the options.
Weatherization and Home Energy Solutions
Home Energy Solutions is the assessment program that gates a lot of the rest. A technician walks the house, runs health and safety tests, and installs basic efficiency items on the spot. As of April 1, 2026 the assessment copay is 40 dollars, and air sealing is included at no cost up to a set number of hours with an hourly fee beyond that for larger or older homes.
The reason to care is what it unlocks. Insulation and weatherization incentives reported up to 10,000 dollars sit behind that assessment, and a properly sealed and insulated house also means a smaller heat pump, which means a smaller quote. In a New England housing stock full of houses built before 1985, sealing the envelope first is usually better money than buying more equipment.
Sequence matters more than people expect
Weatherize first, then size the equipment. We have walked into houses where the homeowner bought a system sized for a leaky envelope, then air sealed afterward, and ended up with an oversized system that short cycles. Doing it in the right order saves money twice.
Smart-E financing, and what changed on August 1
The Smart-E loan is Connecticut Green Bank financing offered through participating lenders for qualifying energy projects. The heat pump special offer changed this year, and if you read about it earlier in 2026 the number in your head is probably out of date.
| Term | Detail as of August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Promotional rate | 1.99 percent |
| Term length | Five years |
| Maximum at the promotional rate | 25,000 dollars, with a blended rate above that |
| Maximum loan | 50,000 dollars |
| Offer window | August 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026 |
| Eligibility | Eversource or Avangrid customer, approved for an Energize CT heat pump rebate, and a contractor who is both an approved Smart-E contractor and in the Heat Pump Installer Network |
| Covers | Air source heat pumps, mini splits, geothermal and heat pump water heaters, with no prepayment penalty |
The earlier 0.99 percent promotion ran through July 31, 2026 and has ended. Standard Smart-E rates outside the heat pump special run considerably higher, so the promotional window is the thing to pay attention to if you are deciding between this year and next.
We walk through every option during an estimate, including manufacturer promotions. Our financing page and our Connecticut HVAC financing guide cover the mechanics.
How to actually claim it
Most lost rebates are lost on process, not eligibility. The order below is the one that works.
Book the Home Energy Solutions assessment first
It is inexpensive, it improves the house on the day, and it opens the weatherization incentives. It also gives you a defensible picture of what the house actually needs.
Confirm your contractor is in the Heat Pump Installer Network
Ask directly and get it in writing on the proposal. This single question protects the largest incentive on the list.
Check the equipment against the qualified product list
Cold climate certification is the usual gate. A model that looks equivalent on paper can fail the list.
Get the incentive stated on the written proposal
Amount, program name, and who files the paperwork. If a contractor will not put it in writing, that tells you something.
Line up financing before the install, not after
Smart-E eligibility is tied to rebate approval and contractor status, so it is easier to arrange in the right order.
Keep every document
Invoice, model and serial numbers, and the AHRI certificate if one applies. Programs audit, and a missing serial number can stall a claim for months.
Stacking our current offer with state money
Our own offer is separate from anything the state runs, and it stacks. Right now we take 500 dollars off every new system installation. That is our discount off our price, not a state program, and it does not affect what Energize CT pays. Every installation we do also carries a full year of parts and labor warranty.
Be careful with contractors who blur this line
If a quote presents a company discount as though it were a government rebate, or bundles the two into one number you cannot separate, ask for them itemized. You are entitled to see what is a state incentive, what is a manufacturer promotion, and what is the contractor simply lowering the price.
Frequently asked questions
Are there still federal tax credits for a new heat pump in 2026?
The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. If you installed qualifying equipment before that date you may still claim it on the return for that year. For anything installed in 2026, confirm current federal rules with a tax professional before you count on a credit.
Can I get a Connecticut rebate on a new gas furnace or boiler?
Not through Energize CT. The sponsors of Energize Connecticut discontinued rebates on natural gas heating equipment for sales after December 31, 2024. If you are replacing gas, oil, propane or electric resistance heat, the incentive money in 2026 sits with heat pumps through the Energy Optimization path.
Do I have to use a specific contractor to get the heat pump rebate?
Yes. Energize CT heat pump incentives require an installer in the Heat Pump Installer Network, and the equipment has to be on the qualified product list. Using a contractor outside the network disqualifies the rebate entirely, no matter how good the install is.
What is the Smart-E loan rate right now?
As of August 2026 the CT Green Bank heat pump special is 1.99 percent on a five year term, with a maximum of 25,000 dollars at that promotional rate and a blended rate above that up to a 50,000 dollar maximum. The offer runs from August 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026. The earlier 0.99 percent promotion ended July 31, 2026.
Can I stack the 500 dollar discount with a Connecticut rebate?
Yes. Our 500 dollars off every new system installation is our own discount, not a state program, so it comes off our price and the Energize CT incentive is handled separately. Every installation we do also carries a full year of parts and labor warranty.
How do I know what is actually available on the day I buy?
Check energizect.com before you sign anything, and ask your contractor to confirm the incentive in writing on the proposal. Program amounts, caps and qualifying equipment lists change between program years and sometimes mid year.
