What the work is actually like
A service day is diagnostic work: you show up to a cold house, figure out why, fix it, and explain it to the homeowner in words they understand. An install day is physical: setting equipment, running line sets, sheet metal, brazing, wiring. Some of it happens in tight crawl spaces and hot attics. In January you will work in unheated basements, because that is where the broken furnace lives.
The good part nobody mentions: you end every day with something fixed. A family that woke up cold goes to bed warm because you knew what you were doing. That does not get old.
What your first year actually looks like
Month one you carry things, drill holes where you are told, and learn the truck inventory. By spring you are hanging line sets, pulling vacuum, and doing your first solo maintenance visits on systems your shop knows well. By month twelve a good helper is running parts of installs and reading a low refrigerant symptom before the gauges come out. None of that requires talent so much as attention. The techs who advance fastest are the ones who ask why, not just what.
The seasons teach different lessons. Your first heating season is diagnostic school: no heat calls, one after another, each one slightly different. Your first cooling season is install school, because that is when Connecticut adds equipment. Two full seasons in, you know whether this trade is yours. The heat pump wave is your tailwind
Connecticut is pushing hard toward electrified heating, and rebate programs keep nudging homeowners from oil toward heat pumps and ductless systems. For a tech entering now, that is the single best trend in the trade: every conversion is an install today and a service relationship for fifteen years after. The techs who get fluent in inverter systems, refrigerant management, and cold climate heat pump sizing in their first few years will spend their careers being recruited.
At the same time, the state’s older housing stock keeps the classic skills valuable. Steam boilers from the fifties, oil furnaces with decades on them, radiators nobody makes parts for: someone has to know that equipment too, and fewer people do every year. Scarce skills price accordingly.
