The short answer, and the better question
Every boiler in Connecticut should be serviced once a year. Manufacturers require it, warranties are written around it, and the equipment itself is built on the assumption that somebody opens it annually. That part is not controversial.
The better question is when. Book it in late summer or early fall. Two reasons. First, if the service turns up a failed part, you find out in September with time to order it rather than in January with the house at fifty degrees. Second, everybody in the trade is buried from the first cold snap onward, and the wait for a non emergency visit gets long fast.

A surprising number of homeowners are not sure, and the words get used interchangeably in conversation even though the equipment is completely different. It matters, because the service is different, the failure modes are different, and searching for the wrong one sends you to the wrong advice.
The fastest way to tell is to follow what comes out of it.

Oil fired against gas fired, where the schedules differ
Both need annual service. What differs is what happens inside during the year and therefore what the technician actually does.
Oil fired boilers
Oil is a dirtier fuel to burn than gas, and combustion leaves deposits. An oil boiler has genuine consumable parts. The nozzle wears and changes its spray pattern, the oil filter loads up, the pump strainer collects sludge from the tank, and soot builds on the heat exchanger surfaces where it works as insulation, which is exactly the opposite of what you want. Skip a year on an oil unit and efficiency drops measurably while the risk of a nuisance lockout on the coldest night goes up.
Gas fired boilers
Gas burns clean, so there is no nozzle to swap and far less soot. That makes gas boilers more forgiving of a late service, which is precisely why they get neglected. The annual visit on a gas unit is about combustion setup, safety controls, venting, and the water side of the system. Condensing units add their own maintenance: the condensate trap and drain need to stay clear, and the heat exchanger needs attention because condensate is mildly acidic.

What a real boiler service covers
If a service visit takes fifteen minutes and nobody puts a combustion analyzer on the unit, you did not get a service. Here is the actual work.
Combustion analysis
The analyzer goes in the flue and the burner gets set to the numbers rather than by eye or by ear. This is the difference between a boiler running at its rated efficiency and one quietly wasting fuel all winter.
Safety controls tested
Pressure relief valve, low water cutoff, high limit and the operating control. These are the parts that matter when something else goes wrong.
Consumables replaced on oil units
Nozzle, oil filter and pump strainer, plus cleaning soot from the chamber and flue passages. On gas units this step becomes burner and heat exchanger inspection.
Water side checked
System pressure, the expansion tank, the circulator, and bleeding trapped air out of the loop. Most banging and uneven heat complaints trace back to this step.
Venting and draft inspected
The flue, the chimney connection and the draft. This is a carbon monoxide check as much as an efficiency one.
Findings written down
What was adjusted, what is wearing, and what should be watched next year. A service with no report is hard to tell apart from no service at all.
Signs that mean call now, not at the next service
- No heat, or heat in only part of the house. Partial heat often means a circulator, a zone valve or air in the loop rather than a dead boiler.
- Banging or kettling. Kettling is the sound of scale or restricted flow letting water boil against hot metal. It gets worse, not better.
- Water on the floor. A weeping relief valve or a leaking fitting is small until it is not. Cast iron sections are expensive.
- Pressure that will not sit still. A gauge that climbs past normal or drops toward zero points at the expansion tank or the fill valve.
- Short cycling. Firing and quitting repeatedly wastes fuel and wears components fast.
- Oil smell or visible soot on an oil unit. That is a combustion problem and it needs attention now.
Carbon monoxide is the one that is not a judgment call
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call from outside. Do not troubleshoot the boiler first. Every home with fuel burning equipment should have working carbon monoxide alarms, and the annual service is a good prompt to test them.
What skipping service actually costs
The bill for a skipped year is rarely the service you avoided. It shows up in four other places.
Efficiency goes first and quietly. A boiler with a fouled heat exchanger and a burner drifting out of adjustment burns more fuel for the same heat, and you pay that every month of the season without ever seeing a fault.
Then reliability. The failures that strand people in January are usually the small consumable ones that a fall service would have caught, and an emergency call on a holiday weekend costs considerably more than a scheduled visit.
Then warranty. Most manufacturers write an annual service requirement into the coverage. When a heat exchanger fails at year eight and there are no service records, that conversation goes badly.
Then lifespan. Neglect ages equipment. The difference between a boiler that gets opened every year and one that does not is measured in years of useful life, and replacing a boiler is a far larger number than maintaining one.
When repair stops making sense
We would rather give you an honest number than sell you a repair that fails again next season. The general shape of it:
- Under fifteen years with a control, circulator, valve or ignition fault: repair, almost always.
- Fifteen to twenty five years with a failing but repairable component: usually still repair, provided the boiler block itself is sound.
- Any age with a cracked or leaking cast iron section, or a failed heat exchanger on a condensing unit: that is the boiler itself, and replacement is normally the better use of the money.
- Repeated failures in one season on an aging unit: the pattern is telling you something the individual parts are not.
